Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is faced with her most daunting task yet: bring in the mysterious former Special Forces agent Carlos Manoso (aka Ranger). He’s the man who taught her everything about fugitive apprehension, and Stephanie knows she will be testing her skills against the master. But even if she does catch him, she’s not so sure she could turn in her friend-even if he is wanted for murder…And if this isn’t enough to keep her up at night, Grandma Mazur is crimping her sex life by moving in with her and keeping her from getting any action from her cop boyfriend, Joe Morelli. Now, with her love life messing with her head, two threatening goons on her tail, and three corpses-so far-it’s getting a little too hot for Stephanie whose search for Ranger is bringing her dangerously close to the wrong side of the law…
I started this book with hesitation, knowing that reading six books in the same series so close together is a bad idea. But when it arrived to me in my BookSwim package, I decided to read it anyways, deciding it was worth the risk. Thankfully, I didn’t get so bored with it I had to quit, like other times.
One reason I didn’t get bored with this book was because it offered something a bit different from previous novels. With Ranger on the run, Stephanie is left to handle some of the more difficult apprehensions by herself. This gets her into some sticky situations with Lula so faithfully by her side. These are the scenes that I enjoy the most, as they produce numerous fits of laughter.
The other reason I didn’t get bored with this book is because a lot happened. Individual books in a book series often focus a lot on current happening, and very little on character and plot development. Especially when there’s 15 books and counting in the series. But with this series, that doesn’t happen. The story is constantly moving forward, and that’s something that I really enjoy.
My one complaint, which is ongoing with this series, is that there are too many times when Stephanie is left to just wander around with nothing to do. That makes reading dull at times. Thankfully it wasn’t as bad this time around as it was with the last book, but it’s still disappointing.
All together, this was a great book! But I think I’m giving Stephanie and the gang a break and moving on for a while, just to keep things fresh and interesting.
